Does anyone know what equipment Garcia used around the end of '67 to beginning '68??? like the sounds heard on "Anthem of the Sun" and the quick and the dead tour in early '68? if anyone knows, i would be so grateful. and by this, i mean guitar and amplifier.

Thank You!

Being musicaly retarded, somebody probably knows more about this, but I believe Jer is still playing the custom black 1956 Les Paul with two P-90 single-coil pickups.

Amps are likely Owsley modified Fender twin reverb's with extension cabinets with extra holes drilled into them...

You certainly don't sound musically retarded, but then again I completely am so I suppose I would have no clue whether you are or not.

Either way, nice post Cliff.

Hey man, thanks an aweful lot for the link! it was quite helpful, as was all of you. thanks everyone who helped! the only reason i asked was me and my buddy had a discussion on whether or not jerry had been playing the Gibson SG on `Anthem' cause it sounded like the same sound as `Live Dead' i said it wasn't. i guess i was right, which is good, but wrong at the same time. i said he was still with the Guild only through a different amp. :( oh well. Thanks again everybody!

As someone completely wedded to the early era sound, centered around 68, I am always amazed by the intensity of Jerry's sound created by different guitarssystems from 66 thru 69. The evolution of his playing style and esp his overall "sound" through 72/73 led to a stabilization of sorts (in my view) that remained with him for the duration. You just don't get that "raw" energy, in your face approach in the 70s and 80s as you might find in June 68 or Dec 68.

Looking at the link provided above it is surprising how many different guitars he used in the early years...

Have to agree Will Tell. Prior to Jerry adding all the effects
through to 70's and 80's NOTHING beats the raw sound that
was conjured up by Jerry in the early years.
Just a guitar and an amp and, One hell of a musican.
